High cholesterol can occur due to various risk factors. Controlling high cholesterol is a must and it can be done following a healthy diet, exercise and medicines. Medication is necessary in cases where the cholesterol levels are difficult to treat or with genetic high cholesterol. There are four classes of medicines that affect the levels of cholesterol. Statins, selective cholesterol absorption inhibitors, fibrates and niacin are the four classes of medicines.

  • Statins:

    Statins help by blocking the chemicals that are used to make cholesterol by the body and help by reducing cholesterol levels which has already deposited in the arteries. Some of the side effects of the statins medicine include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, headache, muscle pain, rashes, constipation and weakness. They have also been reported to rarely cause rhabdomyolysis and failure. This causes deterioration of the muscle cells and also lead to failure of kidney and death.

  • Selective cholesterol absorption inhibitors:

    These drugs are the newer class of drugs and they help to prevent the absorption of cholesterol. Some of the possible side effects of this medicine include runny nose, fatigue, constipation, dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, headache and gas. Weakness and muscle pain are the less common side effects but they are more serious.

  • Fibrates:

    Fibrates helps in increasing the levels of good cholesterol or HDL, and lower the levels of triglycerides. But, these drugs don’t lower the levels of LDL or bad cholesterol. The side effects of this medicine fibrates include liver inflammation, diarrhea, nausea, increased effectiveness of the blood thinners, gallstones, and in rare cases muscle pain and muscle damage.

  • Niacin:

    Niacin helps by affecting the blood fats by increasing HDL or good cholesterol levels, and also by lowering the levels of LDL or bad cholesterol and triglycerides. The side effects of Niacin medicine include headache, mild dizziness, nausea, itching and flushing. This medicine can also worsen the following disease conditions such as liver disease, diabetes gout and stomach ulcers.
