Is There Any Complication of High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty or lipid substance which is required by the body along with other nutrients for proper functioning. But, increased levels of cholesterol can causes various complications which include heart disease, strokes and other problems. Some of the

complications of high cholesterol

are so severe that they might also result in death. Hyperlipidemia or lipid disorder is the medical term used for increased blood cholesterol.

Here are the

complications of high cholesterol

levels which can be avoided with some preventive measures:

  • Atherosclerosis:

High cholesterol levels can cause a dangerous accumulation or deposition of cholesterol and other substances on the walls (inner side) of arteries. These deposits generally referred to as plaques can reduce the flow of blood through the arteries. This condition then causes other complications which include the following:

  • Chest pain:

If coronary arteries (these arteries are the ones which supply blood to the heart) are affected, then individuals may experience chest pain (also referred as angina) and other coronary artery disease symptoms and signs.

  • Stroke:

If the blood flow from the heart to a part of the brain is blocked by a blood clot, then a stroke may occur.

  • Heart attack:

High cholesterol levels causes deposition of cholesterol on the walls of the arteries. When this plaque rupture or tear, a blood clot might form at the site of the plaque ruptured. This blocks the flow of blood from the heart to other parts of the body or from the other organs to the heart. This stops the blood flow and increases the pressure on the heart, causing heart attack.

The above article discusses briefly about the

complications of high cholesterol

. Individuals suffering with high cholesterol levels must include a healthy diet plan, have a routine medical check up and include physical activities.
