Cancer and Cholesterol

Research has proved that the presence of High-density Lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol is not only good for the heart but also plays a major role in protecting the body from the danger of cancer as well. In the article below we will discuss the association of both HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) with cancer.

Association Of HDL With Cancer

HDL plays a major role in transporting cholesterol to the liver from where it gets transported throughout the body. Hence reducing the risk of heart disease. This mechanism is associated with cancer protection as well. Some aspects of HDL cholesterol are:

  • HDL carries the properties of antioxidants which protect the cells from damage, reducing the risk of abnormal growth of cells and cancer development.
  • HDL affects the immune system of the body and prepares it to defend against cancer.
  • Good cholesterol has some anti-inflammatory properties which creates such an environment in which the cells of cancer cannot thrive.

Association Of LDL With Cancer:

The higher levels of LDL in the body is the reflection of the several conditions like inflammation, higher levels of insulin which can be a direct cause of Atherosclerosis and carcinogenesis. Some studies have established a direct association of age, height and BMI with the risk of cancer in the body.

This study proves that every five years with the increase in the age of person the rate of cancer increases up to 31% and with the increase in 1 kg/m2 in BMI the rate of cancer increases by 21%. The study proved that the age and BMI of the body plays a major role in the development of cancer in the body.
