Meat & Cholesterol – Eating Meat When You Have High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is an important component in the body but at the same time excess of it can be dangerous and can result in the clogging of the arteries which can ultimately result in an heart attack. Although cholesterol is produced inside the body but most of it comes from the saturated fats taken in through different food items.
Animal products are known to carry nearly 2/3 of the total saturated fat taken in through diet. Out of this meat is the considered as the highest carrier of saturated fat inside the body. But giving up meat all together is not a solution. In this article we will discuss what type of meat should be taken in while suffering from high cholesterol content.

Meat To Eat When You Have High Cholesterol:

The meat you can eat when you have high cholesterol are:

  • Fatty Fish:

    This is the best meat item which you can eat even when you have high cholesterol content in it. Fatty fish does not mean that it has high cholesterol content in it . In fact fatty fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acid which increases the amount of good cholesterol in your body and decreases the amount of bad cholesterol. Salmon, mackerel, sardines, lake trout are few of the fishes which you can eat two times in a week.

  • Poultry:

    In order to lower your cholesterol content it is advisable to eat poultry products without skin. The removal of skin will reduce the amount of fat content you will have in your meat. Moreover, avoid frying your meat rather go for a grilled or baked product this will reduced the amount of fat content greatly. Turkey and chicken are the best options fort poultry as they carry less amount of fat as compared to other products.

  • Red Meat:

    Intake of lean cuts of the red meat will reduce the amount of cholesterol content in it. This type of pieces you can eat even when you are having high cholesterol content in it. Also ensure that the finest part of the fat is finely trimmed out even before cooking and cooking must be done in sucgh a manner that it burns away all the remaining fat also like baking, grilling etc.
