What Is HDL Cholesterol Level?

High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) is considered as the ‘good cholesterol’ present in the blood stream. Actually, lipoproteins are the combination of proteins and lipids which are transported in the blood. High density lipoprotein helps in the transportation of the cholesterol from the tissues of the body to the liver from where it is thrown out of the body. It is for the same reason that it is considered as the good cholesterol therefore higher the level of HDL in the body lower is the rate of coronary artery disease.

Exact Levels Of HDL In The Body:

There are no formal guidelines about what should be the exact levels of HDL in the body but it has been understood that those with the history of coronary heart problem in the family must have HDL cholesterol above 35mg/dl in men and 45 mg/dl in women. Whereas, those who already suffering from coronary heart disease must have 45mg/dl in men and 55 mg/dl in women.

Always remember that even a small amount of increase in HDL in the body reduces the risk of heart attack in the same ratio. For example, for each 1 mg/dl increase of HDL in body reduces 2- 4% chances of the coronary heart disease. So, it is very important to keep increasing the amount of good cholesterol in the body.

Steps To Increase HDL Cholesterol In Body:

Some of the basic steps which will help you in increasing the amount of HDL in your body are:

  • Exercise regularly. Emphasize more on aerobic exercises as these will help in increasing your good cholesterol greatly.
  • Shed of the excess weight of the body. Always remember that excess of weight invites heart diseases. So, it is advisable to lose your excessive weight with immediate effect.
  • Avoid smoking regularly. Smoking once a while helps increasing your HDL but chain smoking can be harmful.
  • Similarly consumption of alcohol once in a day helps in increasing your HDL but excessive intake can have negative effects as well.
  • Above mentioned are the few changes you will have to make in your lifestyle in order to increase your HDL cholesterol. When these changes do not show the desired results then medication is taken to serve the purpose.
