What Causes High HDL Cholesterol?

The level HDL cholesterol in the body is considered as high HDL cholesterol, when its level rises to 60mg/dl or above it. At this point, HDL is known to protective against the disease of heart. The average HDL cholesterol for women is nearly 55 mg/dl, whereas for men it is 45 mg/dl. In this article, we try to find out some of the causes which can result in high HDL.

Causes Of High HDL Cholesterol: 

Usually the cause of high HDL is not known. It mostly appears due to genetic reason. If one person of the family suffers from this condition, the other is most likely to suffer from the same condition. But there are some other causes also which can result in high HDL cholesterol. Some of them are discussed below:

  • Intake of estrogen tablets/medicines
  • Consumption of alcohol on regular basis
  • Presence of the condition called as primary biliary cirrhosis
  • Some of the medicines of cholesterol carry nicotinic acid, fibrates and satins which can result in the increase of HDL cholesterol.
  • If high level of aerobic exercises is carried out for a longer duration like long distance running etc, then it can also result in high HDL cholesterol.

Ways To Increase HDL Cholesterol In The Body:

Actually, HDL cholesterol is considered as good cholesterol and its high levels in the body can prevent heart attack up to great extent. So, here are few ways which can be followed to increase the levels of cholesterol in the body. They are:

  • Make changes in your lifestyle by quitting smoking, doing regular workout, losing weight etc.
  • Intake of some cholesterol medicines can also result in raising the amount of HDL cholesterol in the body.
  • Keep in mind that the more active you are, the more will the quantity of HDL in your body and hence the danger of heart attack will also be less as compared to others.
