Types of Heart Attacks

Heart attack is a condition in which there is inadequate flow of blood to the heart resulting in permanent death or impaired functioning of a section of heart muscles. There are certain types of heart attacks categorized into 3 different criteria. The consequences of heart diseases depend on the type of heart attack and how quickly it is administered.

Based on three different criteria, the heart attacks are classified into different types. The criteria and the types of heart attacks are as follows:

Damage of some part of the heart – According to this criterion, heart attacks are of two types:

  • Anterior infarct
This is the most dangerous heart attack type which is caused by blockage in the left coronary artery branch. The left ventricle i.e the lower chamber of the heart's left side is affected. Even the front part of the heart is damaged.
  • Posterior infarct
This is less dangerous type of heart attack which is caused by blockage in any one of the branches of right coronary artery. The back part and the base of the heart are affected.

Changes observed on an electrocardiogram – According to this second criterion, heart attacks are again of two types:

  • STEMI (ST segment elevation myocardial infarction)
This is caused by extended period of blockage in the blood supply and therefore major portion of the heart is affected. A significant change is caused on the electrocardiogram and even in the blood chemical marker levels.
  • NSTEMI ( Non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction)
This is caused as a result of temporary or partial blockage in the blood supply and only a minor portion of the heart is affected. No change is observed in the electrocardiogram but the blood chemical markers show an indication of tissue damage that has been occurred.

Anatomic extent of necrosis – According to this third criterion, there are again two types of heart attacks:

  • Transmural myocardial infarction
This is a dangerous heart attack type which results in the death of the three tissue layers of the heart namely epicardium, myocardium and endocardium.
  • Nontransmural myocardial infarction
This is a less severe form of heart attack in which results in the death of some part of heart tissue only.

These are the types of heart attacks categorized into three different criterion.
