  • Cut down the amount of saturated fats in the diet. Instead eat foods rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
  • Eat more and more walnuts, almonds and pecans regularly. Take about 10 – 12 nuts everyday.
  • Eat foods rich in fiber. For example, consume nearly 3 oz of oats everyday.
  • Lessen the amount of alcohol intake.
  • Replace meat foods with soy foods like tofu and soy milk.
  • Consume Mediterranean diet in which includes olive oil as the main dietary fat and whole grains, vegetables, tree nuts, fish, poultry, eggs, diary and red meat as the food products.
  • Eat more amounts of plant sterols and stanols. Substitute butter spreads for margarine or butter in the diet.
  • Perform aerobic exercises like heart pumping and sweating for about 120 minutes a week. This means you can perform for about 17 minutes a day.
  • Eat fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids like tuna or salmon as they are very beneficial to lower your cholesterol levels. Consume fish twice a week.
