Causes of Congestive Heart Failure in Children

Congestive heart failure, also known as heart failure is a medical condition where the heart's pumping ability degrades and therefore blood fails to meet all the body requirements. Children are also known to face this condition but to a lesser extent. The

causes of congestive heart failure in children

are discussed in the following article. The heart in this case is referred as an unhealthy heart and is itself a sign of heart disorder.

Congestive Heart Failure in Children – Causes

In children, heart failure generally occurs as a result of

congenital heart defects

i.e defects present at birth. This is considered to be the major cause for heart failure in children. But, there are many other factors that result in congestive heart failure. They include:

  • Improper functioning of the systemic right ventricle (this is the only ventricle that pumps blood to  all body parts other than the lungs)
  • Ineffective pumping activity of the ventricles because of enlarged heart or excess volume in the circulatory system
  • Infections of heart muscles and/or heart valves, called endocarditis
  • Disease of heart valve caused by rheumatic fever and certain other infections
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Cardiac arrhythmias i.e irregular heartbeats
  • Anemia
  • Chronic lung disorder
  • Post-operative complications
  • Hemorrhage i.e excessive bleeding
  • Hypertension i.e high blood pressure

Even Though the congenital heart defects are treated surgically or not, they lead to heart failure overtime. The defects that cause heart failure include the following conditions.

  • Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries
  • Transposition of great arteries
  • Pulmonary stenosis (a condition of deformed pulmonary valve that makes it hard to allow blood flow)
  • Tetralogy of Fallot (s condition in which oxygen-poor blood mixes with oxygen-rich blood)
  • Mitral or aortic valve disease
  • Single ventricle
  • Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve (Ireland of the tricuspid valve)

These are all the causes of congestive heart failure in children.
