High Blood Cholesterol Causes

There are a wide range of factors that contribute to high blood cholesterol and can even make cholesterol levels to rise out of control. High blood cholesterol causes include heredity, lifestyle and diet factors. The cholesterol levels may also rise due to certain illnesses in the body system. The causes can be categorized into two main categories namely, genetic make-up and lifestyle factors that are discussed below.

Genetic Make-up – High Blood Cholesterol Cause

  • Familial hypercholesterolemia is a condition of very high cholesterol levels. If this runs in the family, people can inherit the condition.
  • Certain people can easily get affected by lifestyle factors (like high fat diet and lack of exercise) that enhance the cholesterol levels in the body.
  • People who are diabetic in a family can easily pass on the high triglyceride levels to the next generation. Triglycerides are a form of fat that can increase the high cholesterol levels in the body.

Lifestyle and Dietary Factors

  • Excessive Eating – Eating foods rich in saturated fats (like dairy products and high-fat meats) in excess amounts can cause increase in cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. These high cholesterol levels can only be lowered by cutting down fatty foods and instead taking foods rich in fiber and starch.
  • Physical activity – Physical exercises done regularly help in lowering the bad cholesterol levels and simultaneously raising the good cholesterol levels.
  • Weight – Obesity or overweight can modestly raise cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. Adopting certain changes that help in lowering cholesterol levels can also help in losing weight.
  • Hormones – Good cholesterol levels simultaneously rise along with the developing hormones in women up to the age of menopause. But, after crossing menopause stage, supplementation of estrogen can only help in maintaining the good cholesterol levels.
  • Alcohol Intake – Alcohol intake can affect cholesterol levels. Excessive intake of alcohol damages the heart and liver muscles, causing a raise in triglyceride and high blood pressure levels.
