Lecithin contains an active substance called phosphatidyl choline that is made into choline in the body. This choline helps in making acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that improves brain functioning. Apart from this activity, it also helps treat high cholesterol levels. Lecithin supplements are made from soy or eggs.

  • The University of Michigan Health System did research study on the effect of lecithin compound on cholesterol levels. It was observed that lecithin not only helps in lowering bad cholesterol but, also increases good cholesterol levels.
  • Another study made at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, failed to show lecithin as a natural cholesterol reducer.
  • A double blind study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that lecithin produced no effects on cholesterol levels.

Lecithin Dosage

  • For treating cholesterol – The daily intake of lecithin supplements should be 500 – 900 mg, thrice a day.
  • For treating liver disorders – 350 – 500 mg, thrice a day
  • For neurological disorders – up to 10 gm, thrice a day

 

Considerations

Lecithin is a safer alternative as it is naturally found in soy and eggs. But, in some cases high dosage of lecithin can cause certain side effects like stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. Large doses can also cause depression and a fishy body odor.
