What Nuts Help Lower Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance produced by the liver and is also obtained from the foods we eat. It plays an important role in body functioning but, excess levels are not good and may cause artery blockage leading to heart diseases. There are certain foods that help in lowering cholesterol levels and therefore reduce heart diseases.

Nuts help lower cholesterol

as they contain omega-3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats. Moreover. They contain dietary fiber that help in lowering cholesterol levels, make the blood vessels flexible and decrease the blood clot formation.

Almonds

According to the study made by the American Heart Association, it was observed that about

1% per 7 gm of almonds helped in lowering the bad cholesterol levels

. Almonds although rich in fat and calorie content, they help in keeping the normal cholesterol levels and thus, they can be taken as a substitute for foods with high fats such as meat and cheese.

Pecans

Pecans are also no more less than other nuts in lowering the cholesterol levels. These are slightly higher than other nuts in calorie and fat content. The fat present in pecans is unsaturated type of fats and thus, they will not raise any bad cholesterol levels. Pecans also contain

vitamin E and antioxidants that slow down the oxidation process of bad cholesterol

and thus, the risk of heart diseases is less.
