Red Yeast Rice

Red yeast rice is a byproduct of rice. On fermenting the rice, a mold known as Monascus purpureus grows turning the rice into reddish purple color. This mold is a dietary supplement of red yeast rice and can be taken as cholesterol lowering supplement. A compound called monacolins present in the mold effectively treats high cholesterol levels.

Function of Red Yeast Rice

  • Red yeast rice prevents cholesterol synthesis in the body. When the cholesterol is not synthesized, there will be reduction in bad or LDL cholesterol levels in the body. A decrease in bad cholesterol levels decreases even the total cholesterol levels.
  • A research study conducted on the effect of red yeast rice on cholesterol lowering showed that intake of 1,800 mg of red yeast rice supplement for a period of 24 weeks lowered the cholesterol levels by 35 mg/dL. A dosage of 600 mg, three times a day along with regular exercises and low-fat diet is beneficial.

Fish Oil

Fish oil extracted from fish like mackerel, tuna and sardines is very effective in lowering cholesterol. The omega-3 fatty acids namely, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid benefit the cholesterol levels.

Function of Fish Oil

  • Fish oil not only reduces bad cholesterol levels but, also can reduce triglyceride levels in the bloodstream. It helps in lowering both the bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels at a time as both of these are transported to the whole body by proteins.
  • It is recommended that a daily intake of 2 – 4 gm of fish oil improves the cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
