is performed to prevent the heart stroke by opening wide the blocked carotid artery that delivers blood to the brain. Carotid arteries are located near the neck region one on either side of the neck. These arteries are narrowed sometimes when the blood clots form in them thus, causing heart stroke. Carotid artery stenting is a treatment technique in which a tiny balloon is inserted and the narrowed artery is made wide open. A stent i.e a metal tube is inserted to keep the widened artery as such.

Stroke Risks

During the stenting procedure, blood clots may form on the equipment and travel to brain leading to a stroke. To reduce this risk, blood thinners are used in the treatment.
The equipment may also carry some of the broken fatty deposits to brain along with blood and may lead to stroke.
Sometimes, the blood clots may even form inside the stent that may later travel to brain with blood flow, causing stroke. To reduce these risks, certain medications are prescribed by the doctor.

Bleeding Risk

In this stenting method, a catheter (thin tube) is inserted through the artery in the leg up to the carotid artery and a stent is placed using this. At the time of inserting the catheter, bleeding may occur and and a bruise develops. In some cases, blood transfusions or surgeries are necessary to cure the bruise.

Artery Blockage

Stenting procedure does not always yield good results and the condition may recur. Symptoms may start developing within a few months leading to risk of stroke. To avoid these complications, stents are coated with medications and placed. But, this too increases the risk of blood clotting.
