How To Fast Before Cholesterol Testing?

Getting your good cholesterol levels checked can be done successfully even if you do not fast before the test. The food you have before cholesterol testing does not show any effects on the levels of cholesterol and remains the same. But to fast before cholesterol testing is required for getting bad cholesterol and triglycerides levels checked.

Why is Fasting Required Before Cholesterol Testing?

Fasting should be done prior to getting bad cholesterol and triglycerides levels tested. An approximate of 12 hours fast is necessary. You should not eat or drink anything except water during this period. This is because it usually requires about 9 – 12 hours for the liver to eliminate the fat substances present in the blood.

What Measures Can be Taken Before Cholesterol Testing?

  • Avoid foods that are high in fat content as they have high levels of triglycerides and these form a potent part in cholesterol test.
  • Consume no fat or calorie rich foods.
  • Drink plenty of water just before the cholesterol test as the cholesterol measures come accurately. Water also helps in removing the triglycerides from the food you ate.
  • Refrain from all foods before 12 hours to testing.
  • If you take medications for any condition, see to that you check with the medical professional whether you can take them or not.
  • Do not smoke, eat or chew any mint or gum during the 12 hours prior to the test.

Will There be Accuracy in the Cholesterol Results?

We cannot always be sure that we get the accurate results in cholesterol testing. There may be cases where in you get incorrect results or errors in cholesterol measurements. Hence, you should always go for a second or even a third test so that you will be sure of the correct results. If there is no much difference in the numbers, then the physician may take the average result of both second and third cholesterol tests.
