Can High Cholesterol Cause Headaches?

Cholesterol is present in every body cell which is fatty in nature. It is one of the important substance that plays a key role in many body functions such as membrane formation, cell production and hormone production. Our body produces cholesterol to some extent needed for body functions and the remaining is obtained from the foods we take.

There are two main types of cholesterol namely, good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. Good cholesterol is also called High-density lipoprotein (HDL) which is required by the body and bad cholesterol is called Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) that has the ability to cause heart disease risks.

How High Cholesterol Causes Headaches

Headache symptoms can trigger at different locations of head and neck which gradually radiate to other head areas. If the headache is accompanied with visual disturbances, it is considered to be a migraine. Research studies showed that migraine headache is directly associated with high cholesterol level. Migraine headache linked with high cholesterol levels also produces many other symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, sensitivity towards light and skin pain.

High Cholesterol Complications

High cholesterol accompanies no symptoms. This is the reason it cannot be identified as such and can only be diagnosed through a blood test. When the cholesterol levels go untreated, the bad cholesterol continues to increase and certain symptoms may arise.

National Institute of Aging

produced the findings of a study done on migraine sufferers with high cholesterol levels in them. It revealed that about 43% of migraine sufferers showed bad cholesterol levels of 240 and higher in their blood tests. Bad cholesterol levels of 200 and less are considered to be ideal.

High cholesterol levels always run in hand with high blood pressure that give rise to many other health complications. To avoid such complications and health risks, one should take a well balanced cholesterol-free diet along with cholesterol lowering medications.
