Niacin For Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy steroid metabolite and is an essential compound in cell membrane. It helps in production of steroid hormones, bile acids and vitamins A.D.E and K. Cholesterol is of two types namely, bad cholesterol and good cholesterol. Niacin for cholesterol helps in lowering the bad cholesterol levels in the blood thus, lowering the risk of heart diseases. It also helps in rising the good cholesterol levels. Hence, doctors suggest to take niacin for cholesterol control in the body.


Niacin also known as vitamin B3 and nicotinic acid, is very important for the body. It is richly found in foods like beef, chicken, fish, legumes, peanuts and cereals. Even the body can synthesize niacin from foods rich in tryptophan. Asparagus, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, carrots, dates, tomatoes, mushrooms, avocados, seeds, nuts and whole grain products provide the body with niacin. Niacin effectively helps in maintaining cholesterol levels in the body.

Bad cholesterol i.e LDL (low density lipoprotein) present in the body increase the risk of heart diseases such as atherosclerosis (accumulation and blockage of arteries). Good cholesterol i.e HDL (high density lipoprotein) helps in eliminating the excess cholesterol from the body by transporting into the liver. Good cholesterol helps in blocking the build up of bad cholesterol in the body.

Niacin on high consumption helps in improving the cholesterol levels. It raises good cholesterol levels and lowers the bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body. Niacin can help in increasing the good cholesterol levels upto 35%. Thus, it prevents the hardening of arteries and thus decreasing risk of heart diseases.

Niacin for Cholesterol Lowering a�� Caution

Studies revealed that people cannot tolerate very high doses of niacin of about 1000 a�� 3000mg per day. It may lead to allergic reactions but are mild and acute. Thus, it is considered to be safer than other drugs or supplements.

Niacin do produce some side effects such as gastrointestinal problems, itchy skin, vitamin imbalance, low blood pressure, etc. People with liver diseases should avoid taking niacin as it increases the risk.
