Diet for High Triglycerides

Diets rich in carbohydrates leads to increase in triglycerides. Sugar and alcohol stimulate triglyceride production and therefore have to lower the intake of sugars such as honey, concentrated sweets, molasses, jellies, sugar, jams, cakes, cookies, pies, candies, ice cream, doughnuts, sweetened gelatin and frozen yogurt. Limit or eliminate the intake of alcohol such as wine, beer, liqueurs and hard liquor. This article gives information about diet for high cholesterol.

Diet for High Triglycerides

High triglycerides in the blood leads to many health problems. The following are the foods to be taken to lower cholesterol.

  • Beverages

    : Black coffee, herbal or plain teas, fresh fruit juice, club soda which is salt free, soft drinks and clear broth.

  • Fish and Meat

    : Fish is best among meats, especially less contaminated or safe. Fish such as wild Pacific salmon, sardines, tilapia, haddock, summer flounder and croaker. Choose lean meats and take only one serving per one week.

  • Vegetables

    : Vegetables like string beans, escarole or squash are recommended to eat daily. Broccoli, celery and broccoli, including potato skins are recommended as it has high fiber content. Fiber helps to reduce cholesterol.

  • Fruits

    : Take three servings of fruit every day. It is good to have one citrus fruit every day.

  • Grains and Bread

    : One slice or one roll of enriched or whole grain bread may be taken. Or you can take four pieces of melba toast or three soda crackers in place of bread. Rice, noodles, spaghetti also can be taken as a substitute of bread.


  • You can use dried beans or peas instead of bread.
  • Eat nuts such as walnuts, almonds and peanuts sparingly.
  • You can take the foods freely which include: spices, mustard, soy sauce, vinegar, flavoring essences, herbs, Worcestershire sauce and non fat bouilin.
  • In order to lower triglycerides level, avoid eating sweets and try to control the intake of carbohydrates (starchy foods like bread, flour and potatoes).
