Trans Fats Cholesterol

Trans fatty acids are also called trans fat, produced when vegetable oils are hardened into margarine or shortening. This fat is also found in other foods which include fried foods likes fried chicken and french fries, cookies, doughnuts, crackers and pastries. Doughnuts contains about 35% to 40% trans fatty acids. French fries contains about 40% of these fats and many popular crackers and cookies range from 30% to 40% trans fatty acids.

This fat increase LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or bad cholesterol levels in the blood, but lowers HDL (high density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol. It can also clog the arteries, cause type 2 diabetes and other health problems.

It can increase the risk of heart disease. Trans fat is used instead of oil in many companies as it has low cost and also extends storage life of products. It can also improve texture and flavour.

Read food labels

You should look at the label before buying any foods. If the label has a�?partially hydrogenateda�? vegetable oil, it means the product contains trans fat. The term a�?shorteninga�? also says some trans fat is present.

  • Spreads

    : Margarine is loaded with saturated fats ands trans fats, these can cause heart disease. Other shortening and non-butter spreads also contain saturated fat and fat.

  • Packaged foods

    : Bisquick, cake mixes and other mixes contain several grams of fat.

  • Soups

    : Soup cups and ramen noodles have high levels of this fat.

  • Fast food

    : Chicken, fries and other deep fried foods in the hydrogenated oils.

  • Frozen food

    : Yummy pot pies, frozen pies, pizzas, waffles and bread fish sticks have the worst fat.

  • Baked goods
