Lower LDL Cholesterol

High levels of bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol can cause heart disease. Many cholesterol medications are available in the market which helps to lower LDL cholesterol, but still your doctor may suggest you to follow therapeutic lifestyle changes. The following are some of the steps to be followed to lower LDL levels:

  • Diet and Weight Loss

    High body mass is not only the risk for heart disease but also other complications, it can increase LDL levels. In order to lower LDL levels try to lose your weight.

    Also, eat the foods which are helpful. Foods which contain low saturated fat and high soluble fiber can help to lower LDL.
    Diet and weight loss can reduce LDL levels up to 20%.

  • Get moving

    Exercise helps you not only to lose weight, but also lowers moderate amounts of cholesterol levels, especially bad (LDL) cholesterol. Aerobic exercises, like cycling, running, swimming and jogging would effectively lower LDL level of cholesterol up to 5% to 10%.

    Other exercises such as walking, weight bearing exercises and yoga also help to lower LDL levels.

  • Stop Smoking

    Smoking cigarette is linked to higher levels of cholesterol and also it results in the formation of oxidized LDL. LDL which is in oxidized form can lead to atherosclerosis. Some reports show that stopping smoking can lower the levels of LDL to about 5%.

  • Drink alcohol

    Consuming moderate amounts of alcohol not only raises HDL levels, but also can lower LDL levels by 4% to 8%. Moderate amounts means one to two drinks a day for men and one drink per day for women.

    Drinking more alcohol than moderate amounts doesn’t give good results in terms of heart health development. Some studies have been shown that consuming alcoholic drinks more than three a day could increase the chances of getting heart disease.
