Cholesterol Triglycerides

Cholesterol is primarily produced in the liver and also can get through the food we eat. Most of the chemical form of fats in the food we eat and found in the body are triglycerides. The energy is stored in the form of triglycerides in the body. This article gives information about cholesterol triglycerides.

Cholesterol Triglycerides

Cholesterol has many functions which include:

  • The formation of cell membranes and their maintenance
  • Sex hormones formation
  • Bile salts production which help to digest foods
  • Vitamin D production

Often, your doctor will perform a blood test to measure the level of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood. For some people, the levels are right. But for most of the people, their genetic make up, their diet or the medications they take causes their cholesterol and triglycerides levels to be higher than the normal level required by the body.

If too much triglycerides and cholesterol is present in the body, it can cause serious threat to the health. It can result in health conditions which include:

  • peripheral vascular disease (arteries are clogged in the legs)
  • lipodystrophy and pancreatitis
  • stroke due to clogged arteries in the neck and head
  • heart disease which is characterized by heart attacks and chest pain

Kinds of Cholesterol

There are two kinds of fats: good cholesterol (HDL)and bad cholesterol (LDL)

  • HDL/High Density Lipids

    HDL is also called good cholesterol. The main function of HDL is, it removes harmful fatty deposits from tissues and cells and carries to the liver. If HDL levels are too low, it increases the risk of heart disease.

  • LDL/Low Density Lipids

    It is also called bad cholesterol. LDL carries cholesterol to the vessels and tissues of the body and get deposited on walls of the vessels, causing clogged or narrowed arteries. If LDL levels are too high, it can increase the risk of heart disease.
