Cholesterol Lowering Drugs

High cholesterol may develop health problems and therefore there is a need to reduce the cholesterol levels. Cholesterol lowering drugs can help to reduce the cholesterol.

Cholesterol Lowering Drugs

  • Niacin

    Niacin is also called as Nicotinic acid. It is a water-soluble B vitamin which helps in improving the lipoproteins and lowers the LDL cholesterol, triglyceride levels and total cholesterol in the body. It also raises the levels of HDL cholesterol.

    There is timed release and immediate release niacin drugs. Side effects of niacin include nausea, indigestion, hot flushes, peptic ulcers and diarrhea. Also, it can contribute to gout, high blood sugar and liver problems. People with diabetes are not recommended to take niacin.

  • Bile-Acid Sequestrants

    Bile-acid sequestrants are of different types which include colestipol, colesevelam and cholestyramine powder. These sequestrants help in lowering bad cholesterol. They bind bile acids in the intestine and excrete them through the stool.

    Then the liver converts cholesterol into bile acids and lowers cholesterol levels. Side effects include abdominal pain, weight loss, flatulence, constipation and diarrhea. They also help in reducing the vitamins absorption, such as vitamin A, D, E and K.

  • Statins

    Statin drugs help to lower cholesterol. These are of different types including fortovase, zocor, baycol, lescol, pravachol and norvir. Although statins effectively lower cholesterol levels, the dangers of drugs and side effects are kept in mind. Muscular disorder can be caused by statin drugs.

  • Fibrates

    Fibrates are of different types including clofibrate and gemfibrozil. They lower triglyceride levels in the blood by producing VLDL and also by removing triglycerides from the blood.

    Fibrates raise the levels of good cholesterol, but they do not help in lowering bad cholesterol levels. Side effects include diarrhea, liver inflammation, gallstones and nausea. Muscle damage also can be caused.

Other Drugs

Other drugs which help to lower cholesterol levels include:
Cholesterol absorption inhibitors a�� These decrease levels of triglycerides, increase HDL and reduce LDL levels. Side effects of this drugs may include fatigue and stomach pain.

Combination of statins and cholesterol absorption inhibitors a�� These combine the statin drugs and cholesterol absorption inhibitor drugs.
