Ways to Prevent High Cholesterol

High levels of cholesterol in a body is detrimental to health, especially it is more dangerous for those with obesity, heart problems and diabetes. To prevent high cholesterol or to lower your high cholesterol levels, a healthy diet is the most effective way to control high cholesterol. Here are a few simple yet effective ways to avoid high cholesterol levels.

  • Identify where you received cholesterol mostly, so that you can avoid such foods from your regular diet. Cholesterol is found mostly in animal based foods, including animal oils and fats, milk, meat, eggs and cheese. Such foods should be consumed in a limited amount.
  • Instead of animals fats, opt for healthy vegetable oils like avocado, olive and safflower. Avoid eating deep fried foods. Instead of frying foods, you can bake, steam or boil. Stay away from pre-package products, because such foods contain high saturated and trans fats, which increase your blood cholesterol.
  • Include plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits in your daily diet. Vegetables and fruits are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which are important nutrients for sustaining a healthy body and help lowering your bad cholesterol.
  • Eat more flax seed, fish and olive oil, oatmeal and beans. These foods help in lowering blood cholesterol levels.
  • Regular exercise help you control overweight, or if you are overweight, regular exercise will help you lose weight and reduce the risk of high cholesterol in your body. So, do exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, or thrice in a week.
  • When your body is stressed, it produce adrenaline which in turn increase the cholesterol levels in your blood. So, avoid from being overstressed or reduce stress. Try practicing meditation, yoga or other relaxation methods to keep your mind free from stress and to avoid high cholesterol.
  • If you are over 40 years old, make sure that you check your blood cholesterol levels each year to prevent from high cholesterol and many other serious health problems.
