How to Control Cholesterol Without Statins

One of the most effective and most common cholesterol lowering drugs is Statin. People with high cholesterol should need to reduce their low-density lipoprotein (LDL)levels. Because this LDL cholesterol is the bad cholesterol that form a plaque on the artery walls and restrict the bloodstream. Therefore, when you have too much of LDL cholesterol in your body, it increase the risk of heart disease.

There are plenty of cholesterol-lowering drugs available today. However, one can also lower the cholesterol level without taking drugs, but by changing certain lifestyle. Here are some effective ways to control your cholesterol levels without statins.

Change your eating habits:

  • Avoid eating food rich in saturated fats and bad cholesterol like fast foods and processed foods. Instead, opt for unsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats.
  • Consume foods that contain good cholesterol which is mostly found in olive and fish oil.
  • Use whole grains instead of bleached flour, because whole grains are rich in soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol levels.
  • Consuming legumes, plant foods, unprocessed foods and other natural foods is very important for the treatment of high cholesterol.

Physical activity or exercise regularly:

  • Every one should do exercise for 30 minutes per day for at least five days in a week to control your cholesterol level.
  • Exercise which makes your body keeping or aerobic exercise such as walking, running, cycling, swimming and dancing are considered the most effective exercise for lowering high cholesterol levels.

Take a niacin supplement:

  • Niacin supplement is a B-vitamin, which is used to raise HDL cholesterol levels. This HDL cholesterol is the good cholesterol that helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) from the bloodstream.
  • Niacin is also present in lean meats, poultry, dairy products and nuts.

Take red yeast rice:

  • Red yeast rice is popularly use in China for many years for the treatment of high cholesterol level. So, you can try taking it in a form of supplement. You can find red yeast rice in many health food stores. However, confer with your doctor before you take it for your safe side.
