Know your Blood Cholesterol Levels

Your cholesterol level can be measured by taking a blood sample from your arm or finger. Then, the blood sample can be tested for HDL cholesterol (also called good cholesterol) and total cholesterol levels. You don’t have to do anything special or fast before taking this blood test.

Even after your HDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels have been tested, you should follow certain guidelines to control your blood cholesterol level. Here are a few guidelines for people for those who don’t have heart disease.

If your HDL cholesterol is 40 mg/dL and your total cholesterol lis below 200 mg/dL:

You don’t have much problem. However, you should check your HDL and total cholesterol levels again after five years. In the meantime, try to keep the levels of your total cholesterol down. Always, choose foods low in cholesterol and saturated fat, be physically active and maintain a healthy weight.

If your HDL cholesterol is below 40 mg/dL and your total cholesterol is below 200 mg/dL:

You may require a lipoprotein profile and find out the level of LDL cholesterol(bad cholesterol). Before taking this test, you need to fast one day prior the test or 10-12 hours before the test. You cannot take anything during this fast other than water, tea or coffee without sugar or cream.

If your HDL cholesterol is 40 mg/dL or more and your total cholesterol levels is between 200-239 mg/dL:

Your doctor needs to see whether you have other risk factor for coronary heart disease and see if you need more test or not. For the safe side, always opt for foods low in cholesterol and saturated fat, no matter what your cholesterol levels are.

Regardless of the level of HDL cholesterol, if you have 240 mg/dL of total cholesterol or more than that:

You need to take a lipoprotein profile to check your LDL cholesterol level. Taking LDL cholesterol test will give your doctor more clear information about your risk of coronary heart disease.
