Omega-3 is the most essential fatty acid. This can be found in vegetable oils such as flax seed oil and fish oils from oily fish like salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel and sardines. Omega-3 fatty acids helps to improve serum fats like cholesterol.

  • Eat more non-saturated fats/oils

: Not only essential fatty acids, but also eat more non-saturated fats. Saturated fat can increase your cholesterol level and it is found in cheese and meat. Reduce eating such food and substitute it with vegetarian meals.

  • Beware trans fats

: Limit your intake of foods which contain hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated or trans fats. Foods such as hard margarine, cookies, cakes, fried foods, snack foods, crackers, pastries, baked goods, donuts and other foods made with these types of fat are to be eaten less.

Trans and hydrogenated fats are similar to saturated fats. A high intake of hydrogenated fat, trans fat or saturated fat increases cholesterol levels and it may result in atherosclerosis.

  • Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits

: Valuable nutrients are packed within fruits and vegetables and also contains phytochemicals (plant chemicals) which can offer some protection against cancer and heart disease.

Fruit contains vitamin C antioxidant (it helps to protect from cancer and atherosclerosis) and potassium (which helps in regulating blood pressure). It also contains fiber which helps in lowering cholesterol slightly. Vegetables also contains valuable nutrients that help to maintain heart health.
