What Causes Elevated Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is found naturally in the body throughout the cells and in the bloodstream. It is needed for proper functioning of the body. But, excess amounts can create health problems by deposition of cholesterol in the arteries.

Cholesterol is not a actual cause of stroke or heart disease, but it is the root for the disease. Lipoproteins carry cholesterol in the bloodstream. Most of the cholesterol is carried by LDL (the low-density lipoprotein) to the cells from the liver.

HDL is known as good cholesterol and LDL is known as bad cholesterol. Cholesterol is carried away from the arteries through HDL. LDL is the major carrier of the cholesterol in the blood.

High amounts of LDL cholesterol may result in deposition of cholesterol in the thin lining of the artery walls, which contributes to the plaque buildup formation. It is known as atherosclerosis.

What Causes Elevated Cholesterol?

The body itself doesn’t provide the fat but is provided through the food you eat. It can be found in food of animal origin. It is necessary for the storage of energy and growth of the body.

Cholesterol is used to make vitamin D, hormones and substances which help to digest the food. It maintains the normal function of the body. Cholesterol is manufactured by the liver for normal cell processes like producing hormones and building cell walls.

However, too much LDL cholesterol is dangerous. Meat, eggs, poultry and dairy products contain high cholesterol. Avoid foods which are greasy and fried. Shellfish and shrimp are also relatively high in fat.

Total cholesterol level will rise in the blood if excessive fat foods are consumed, especially which contains trans fat and saturated fats.

In order to reduce the potential health risks, reduce the amount of cholesterol and saturated fats you eat. Adding complex carbohydrates and plenty of vegetables will improve ill conditions.
