Foods Low in Cholesterol

Cholesterol is one of the main building blocks of hormone and the main component of cell membranes. It is also highly essential for the synthesis of bile acid and vitamin D in the body. However, it becomes your body’s biggest enemy when your body has excess cholesterol. Therefore, diet and cholesterol are closely associated. Maintaining a proper diet, consisting of low cholesterol foods can help your body and prevent high cholesterol risk.

Foods low in cholesterol:

We obtain additional cholesterol from the foods we eat, especially animal products. So, we need to stay away from foods high in cholesterol and saturated foods to lower high cholesterol level. Then, what are the foods we should eat to avoid high cholesterol? Well, to avoid high cholesterol, we need to consume foods low in cholesterol, which generally come from plant sources. Some of the foods low in cholesterol, which you can include in your regular diet are:

Vegetables and fruits

: Include more and more vegetables and fruits in your daily diet, because they are low in calories and cholesterol. Also, fresh vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamins, soluble fibers and many essential nutrients, which are important for your overall health. They can also lower the bad cholesterol in the body and prevent many health problems like heart attacks, strokes and cancer. Stay away from canned vegetables and fruits, because they contain high levels of sodium.


Whole grains are rich in dietary fibers and energy which can help to lower cholesterol levels. Moreover, they are low in calorie and saturated fat content. Breads, cereals, beans, pasta, peas, seeds and nuts have no dietary cholesterol and are high in starch.


All the animal sources or animal products contain cholesterol, but some foods contain a larger amount than others. For example, poultry, fish and shellfish are low in saturated fats and cholesterol. So, you can eat fish, shrimps and turkey without worrying much about cholesterol.

Cholesterol and diet:

Our body obtains cholesterol from two different sources. Good cholesterol required by the body is produced by the liver. Other cholesterol is obtained from the food we consume, especially from animal products. Foods like organ meats, egg yolks, dairy products and whole milk are high in cholesterol, and eating such foods can raise your cholesterol level. Decreasing the intake of dietary cholesterol can help your body to maintain a healthy cholesterol level.

A diet low in cholesterol consists of low cholesterol foods and contains less unsaturated fats. Always stick to unsaturated fats, which are also called good fats. Unlike saturated fats, unsaturated fats can decrease your cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart diseases. Unsaturated fats not only help to lower bad cholesterol, but also increase good cholesterol (HDL) in the body.
