Good and Bad Cholesterol:

Before going further about the cholesterol lowering foods, first let’s understand the two different types of cholesterol “HDL cholesterol” and “LDL Cholesterol”. In simple terms, HDL is the good cholesterol that is required by our body. While, LDL cholesterol is the bad cholesterol that builds plaque in your arteries and leads to heart diseases.

  • Sandwich is good to eat, especially when you are in hurry. Choose a pita or whole wheat bread with some lean chicken, tuna, turkey, fish or with vegetables.
  • Avoid eating high cholesterol and processed meats like hot dogs, salami and bologna.
  • To lower your cholesterol, include more fish, especially salmon in your diet. Choose the wild red salmon, because they are healthier and rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Avoid taking those foods that contain trans fats. Trans fats will not only decrease your good cholesterol (HDL) levels but also increase your bad cholesterol (LDL) levels.
  • Fats present in nuts are good and healthy fats. So, feel free to eat different varieties of nuts like walnuts, macadamia nuts, almonds, pecans and cashews.
  • Consume more high fiber foods to reduce your cholesterol levels. Oat meal, whole wheat bread, vegetables, fruits, beans and certain cereals are some good choices.
  • Always stick to lean meat. Use a barbeque or a grill to cook them to remove the harmful grease.
  • Salads are good for your health, but most salad dressings, croûtons, bacon bits etc are not. So, use only vinegar, olive oil or lemon juice.
  • Most fruits and vegetables are good for health and are considered the best low cholesterol diet. Some of the best fruits and vegetables are oranges, papaya, mangoes, pineapple, apricots, kiwi, blackberries, spinach, apples, bananas, water chestnuts, green peas, cauliflower, tomato, broccoli, onions and garlic.
