What is Cholesterol Management?

Cholesterol management is a way of maintaining cholesterol at normal levels. This could be achieved by dietary changes, exercises and drugs.

Cholesterol Management – Diet

  • Include fiber rich foods in the diet. These fibers have properties of cholesterol reduction. Oats are the richest source of these fiber.
  • Plant sterols are compounds that are helpful in reducing LDL levels in the body. They occur in vegetables, seeds, nuts, fruits, grains and legumes.
  • Include omega 3 fatty acids in the diet. Fish is the richest source of it. These fats help in lowering triglycerides in the body.
  • Walnuts are rich sources of protein, antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, nutrients and healthy fats. They have cholesterol reducing effects.
  • Green tea, dark chocolate and red wine improve the levels of good cholesterol in the body.
  • Include herbs such as gingko biloba, garlic, bilberry, guggul, artichoke, grape seed extract and turmeric in the diet.

Cholesterol Management – Exercises and Drugs

Exercises

  • Exercises are the easiest and best way to manage cholesterol levels. Exercises may be jogging, running, walking, gardening and aerobics.
  • Regular walking enhances the rate of circulation in the body. As circulation is enhanced, arteries gets cleared of excess fats deposited on them.
  • Walking should be done for about 30 minutes a day. By doing so regularly, one can enhance HDL (good cholesterol) levels and decrease LDL levels in the body.

Drugs

  • The most common drugs used for treatment of cholesterol include statins, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, fibrates, bile acid sequesters and vitamin niacin.
  • Drugs are mostly suggested if the cholesterol levels are very high. Dosage given is dependent on the individual capacity to tolerate the drugs.
  • These are often recommended if dietary changes and exercises do not work. However, excess of these drugs should not be taken as they cause side effects.

Other Ways

Few other ways include:

  • Avoid smoking.
  • Switch to active life.
  • Weight loss.
  • Regular check up of cholesterol level can help.
