  • High cholesterol levels in the body may be genetic. This condition is referred as familial hypercholesterolemia. It affects 1 in 500 people. It is the main cause for early heart attacks. This disease is caused when two defective genes from parents are transferred to child.
  • Cholesterol tends to deposit on the walls of arteries in the form of plaques. Due to deposition of plaques it causes block in the arteries and lead to heart disease. The arteries turn to yellow color due to deposition of fat.
  • Sometimes excessive cholesterol shows up in the form of yellow bumps known as xanthomas. These patches are found in joints, eyelids and hands. They vary in size. These deposits are more commonly found in people affected with familial hypercholesterolemia.
  • Everyone know that having high cholesterol is dangerous and causes health problems. But sometimes having lower cholesterol also is unhealthy. Total cholesterol should be about 200mg/dl. However, levels below 160mg/dl causes health risk like cancer. In case of pregnant woman, it causes premature delivery of the baby.
