A state, technically called atherosclerosis, causes this condition. This article tries to understand the relation between cholesterol and Coronary heart disease.

How Cholesterol and Coronary Heart Disease are Related ?

Oxygen rich blood is supplied to the body by heart through the veins and arteries. It is through these tube-like structures blood either leaves or enters heart. These pathways get blocked as cholesterol levels rise in the blood. The blockages are the cell debris called plaque. It is basically made up of calcium, fat and other substances found in the blood.

The plaque hardens making it difficult for heart to function properly with the passage of time. When ignored in the initial stages, this state causes heart to work harder and get exhausted as the blockage in the arteries and veins thickens. Pain in the chest and irregular heart beats are couple of problems experienced by a person. With complete blockage of the veins and arteries by plaque, the fatal condition known as heart attack is the result.

In some situations, cracking of plaque takes place. This leads to the blood getting clotted and further narowing the pathways of heart. The result is angina and ultimately causing a heart attack.
