Coronary artery disease is the common type of heart disease responsible for more number of deaths in America than other heart ailments. This condition is caused because of a state technically called atherosclerosis. This article tries to understand the relationship between cholesterol and coronary artery disease.

How Cholesterol and Coronary Artery Disease are Related ?

The heart provides oxygen-rich blood to the body through the veins and arteries. These are tube like structures through which blood either leaves or enters the heart. When the levels of cholesterol rise in the blood, these pathways get blocked by cell debris called plaque. This substance is primarily made up of fat, calcium and other substances found in the blood.

As time passes by and the situation is ignored, the plaque hardens making it difficult for heart to function normally. Blockage in the arteries and veins compel the organ to work harder leading to its exhaustion. As a result, an individual experiences pain in the chest called Angina. When the veins and arteries are completely blocked by plaque, the fatal condition known as heart attack results.

Sometimes the plaque can crack. When this happens the blood clots in the arteries or veins further narrowing these pathways. It results in angina and heart attack too.

Steps to Prevent High Levels of Cholesterol and Coronary Artery Disease Risk:

  • Intake of fresh vegetables is essential replacing the urge for cheap and easily available fast food.
  • Physical exercise should be the norm of the family and parents should discourage lack of inactivity in their kids.
  • There are no symptoms of high cholesterol levels. Following the recommendations of the American Heart Association, everybody above the age of 20 years should check their cholesterol levels every 5 years periodically.
  • Use of anti-cholesterol drugs should be discouraged. Some research studies have found out that the side effects of these drugs also include cancer.
