Triglycerides are the third important form of fat after the good and bad cholesterols. They are a major component of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and chylomicrons. Together with HDL and LDL, triglycerides form the total cholesterol level in the body. This article tries to gain further insight on this very important form of fat in the body.

What Triglycrides Do in the Body ?

They are produced by fat and liver cells. They are twice more energetic than the nutrients carbohydrates and proteins. They are a vital energy source utilized by the body in its various metabolic activities. Whenever the body is in need of energy in the form of fatty acids, triglecerides are broken down signalled by the hormone glucagon. Glucose is the fuel required by the brain to function normally. Since it cannot use fatty acids directly, it uses a component of triglecerides called glycerol and converts it into glucose.

When triglycerides cross their normal range in the body, risk of heart disease and stroke rises. It happens because of the excess formation of cell debris called plaque in the pathways of the organs heart and brain. As continuous supply of oxygen rich blood is halted by these blockages, these organs fail to perform their task leading to fatal conditions like heart attack and stroke.

How to Reduce Triglycerides Cholesterol in Blood ?

Diets high in carbohydrates raise the levels of glucose in the body. As a result, the organ pancreas has to produce the hormone insulin in excess. This excess production of insulin also raises triglycerides cholesterol in blood, especially in women. Though low-carb diet is recommended for women, it is found that low glucose level because of less carbohydrate intake does not affect the level of triglycerides.

Exercise and intake of omega 3 fatty acids from fish reduce this fat’s presence in the body. In the United States, it is recommended to take 3 grams of flax seed oil in the form of injection to keep triglycerides level in check. Heavy alcohol consumption should be avoided as it increases the level of this fat.
